Ecologist study not only organisms and their relation to other organisms, but also to their physical surrounding as well.

It's important to study both because organisms rely on abiotic factors to be able to sustain life. Sunlight, water, air, and soil are all abiotic factors that are essential to life. Also, abiotic factors my influence how an organism adapts to its environment over time.
