When you look at the test scores it is alarming to see that minorities, mainly Blacks and Hispanics, are scoring much lower than their white peers. This stigma is catastrophic for our Black and Hispanic children. As these students move on to middle school the test scores are even lower and these students continue to fall further behind. This situation does not have to be permanent it can be solved. It is not an overnight fix but it can be reformed. The achievement gap can be closed if an intense effort is made. This research will look at ways to close the achievement gap and raise the scores of the lower level readers in a Florida Middle School. This study will contribute to the field by imploring a mixed method design which will derive empirical data of a qualitative and quantitative nature on the effectiveness of a tutoring program to help close the achievement gap between minority students. ...
